Southwest Airlines says it will replace the “One Night in Dubai” theme advertised for a Dallas employee holiday party, announcing the planned change in response to questions from The Dallas Express and acknowledging that the original announcement circulated before leadership had fully vetted the idea.
A Southwest flight attendant alerted The Dallas Express to the announcement and reported dissatisfaction among fellow flight attendants about the theme for a celebration during the Christmas season. DX could not independently confirm how widespread the complaints were.
“The party announcement you asked about was sent out before the idea had been fully vetted by the Leadership Team,” Southwest spokesman Lynn Lunsford wrote in a September 16 email to The Dallas Express. “We will be sharing a new party theme with the DAL Employees in the near future.”
Southwest disclosed the planned change in response to The Dallas Express’ questions. The airline did not say when it made the decision.
Employee Raises Concerns
The flight attendant spoke on condition of anonymity because she fears losing her job for bringing the matter to public attention.
She said she was hearing that many colleagues were unhappy with the Dubai theme for what they regarded as a Christmas celebration.
The flyer called the event a “Holiday Party.” It did not describe the gathering as a religious observance.
Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates. The UAE Embassy states that more than 75% of the country’s residents are Muslim. That statistic covers the entire country, rather than Dubai specifically.
December Party Advertised Across Employee Groups
The original “Save the Date” poster advertised “One Night in Dubai” for Saturday, December 5, 2026, with additional information to follow. It listed a premium bar, food trucks, a hookah bar, a cigar bar, a dessert station, a DJ, a henna artist, photo booths, dancers, and live entertainment.
The flyer also included “outfit inspiration” for men and women:

According to the flight attendant, the party is intended for Southwest employees across Dallas Love Field, including customer service agents, ramp workers, provisioning employees, gate agents, pilots, and flight attendants. She said the gathering would involve “thousands of guests.”
Southwest’s response referred to “DAL Employees” but did not confirm the complete invitation list or anticipated attendance.
DX Questions Selection And Oversight
Information provided to The Dallas Express indicated that an August 18 email invited employees to vote on holiday-party themes, followed by distribution of the selected-theme announcement on September 15. According to the flight attendant, the August 18 email “invited us to cast our vote for the ‘Holiday Party’ theme.”
The flight attendant said the August email came from Carrie Haynes’ account and was signed by someone identified as McKenzie, a DAL Above the Wing supervisor.
DX asked Southwest to verify the timeline and explain the selection process.
“Who proposed the theme choices and how was ‘One Night in Dubai’ selected?” DX asked.
The email from The Dallas Express was addressed to Carrie Haynes and copied Southwest’s media relations team.
DX asked nine questions, including event confirmation, organizers and sponsors, invited employee groups, the reported vote, announcement distribution, the theme’s meaning, previous themed parties, funding, and any additional context Southwest wished to provide.
Airline Says A New Theme Is Coming
At 12:30 p.m. on September 16, Southwest’s public relations team acknowledged the inquiry from The Dallas Express.
“We are looking into this and will get back to you. It might be later this afternoon,” the team wrote.
At 2:03 p.m., Lunsford supplied the statement explaining that the announcement preceded full leadership vetting and that a new theme would be shared with employees.
“Thanks for checking,” he added.
The response did not individually address DX’s questions or identify the replacement theme. It also did not announce a change to the December 5 date.
