The Texas Department of Public Safety has changed how it administers commercial driver license knowledge exams.

Beginning June 1, all CDL and commercial learner permit knowledge tests must be completed in English only. The move brings state procedures in line with federal English language proficiency rules.

Knowledge exams had previously been offered in English and Spanish. The hands-on skills test, which covers pre-trip inspection, basic control skills, and the road test, has always been given in English.

Applicants scheduled for testing on or after June 1 must be ready to take all written and automated exams in English. Interpreters are not allowed. Updated study materials and the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver’s Handbook are available free on the DPS website.

DPS officers and other certified inspectors will continue to check English proficiency during traffic stops and at weigh stations. Drivers who fail to meet the standard will be placed out of service.

The department reported that these steps support ongoing efforts to improve road safety.
