Eight Puppies Left To Die in Garbage Bag

A “Good Samaritan” reportedly rescued several puppies that had been placed in a trash bag and abandoned amid sweltering triple-digit temperatures in Austin.

The puppies were only a few days old and in critical condition when they were taken to an animal rescue facility on June 22. Eight puppies were discovered in the bag, but only seven managed to survive the ordeal.

“We received a call that a Good Samaritan had brought in a litter of puppies that were found in a garbage bag right next to a dumpster. They probably saw them writhing around in the bag and did something, and that is huge,” said Ellen Jefferson, president and CEO of Austin Pets Alive!, speaking with Fox 7.

The puppies required emergency care upon arrival, suffering from hunger and hypoglycemia.

“I know they would have died if they had been out there in the storm the other night, or if they had been there, you know, longer than the day. So my guess is that they were probably placed by the trash that morning,” Jefferson told the news outlet.

The American Kennel Club says that dogs and heat do not mix because dogs do not have sweat glands, and their bodies are covered in fur. Owners need to be careful not to leave dogs in cars — with windows open or closed — as temperatures can become deadly. The organization recommends that dog owners ensure their dogs get plenty of shade and have water available when outside during the summer months. Frozen treats and chew toys are also a great way to keep dogs cool.

Stephanie Bilbro, director of life-saving operations for Austin Pets Alive!, made an appeal to the public to help support the clinic, CBS Austin reported.

“If people want to support these puppies who are in our care, but can’t commit to fostering, it also takes a lot of money and supplies to support these puppies. So, people can donate directly on our website, or they can email [email protected] to inquire about other ways to support us either through supplies or monetary donations.”
