A new water pump station is being built in McKinney. The new pump and its accompanying water storage tank will cost about $100 million, sourced from the taxpayer-funded North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) Regional Water System.

The pump is scheduled to break ground later next year and is expected to be ready to go in 2025. A unanimous decision by the McKinney City Council and the Planning and Zoning Commission was made at meetings in September and October.

The McKinney Pump will be installed next to the existing pump on Redbud Boulevard. Together, the two pumps will be able to meet the demand for water in the area.

“It is fairly commonplace to add a pump station, especially as regional systems like ours experience growth and expansion,” said an NTMWD representative.

Recent census data shows that Collin County’s population increased from 886,633 to over a million residents in the last 5 years, so adding this additional pump is necessary.

“With approximately 55,000 people moving to our service area every year, there is an increase in water needs,” said the representative.
