UIL Realignment Hits DFW

On Thursday, the UIL officially announced its new districts as part of its biennial realignment for high school football, basketball, and volleyball.

While the realignment has been announced, schools can still change districts through an appeals process. They will have until February 12 to file an appeal, which will be heard on February 20. District schedules for 2024 can start to be finalized on February 21.

You can find the complete list of realigned districts here. Below are some notable changes in each classification pertaining to schools in Dallas-Fort Worth.

6A
Enrollment: 2,275 and above

— After rumors of a potential move down to 5A, DeSoto stays in 6A by request. Garland Lakeview Centennial, Garland Naaman Forest, and South Garland were also placed in 6A by request.

— Highland Park moves from 6A to 5A Division I, the only change to District 7-6A.

— Forney, Lancaster, Longview, and Justin Northwest move up to 6A due to enrollment

— There are 249 6A schools across the state.

— DeSoto remains in District 11-6A along with Duncanville, Cedar Hill, Waxahachie, and Dallas Skyline, while Lancaster, Mesquite, and Mesquite Horn have replaced the Mansfield schools.

— Schools in Districts 6-6A and 5-6A have flipped. 5-6A now includes Coppell, Denton Braswell, Denton Guyer, Lewisville, Flower Mound, Hebron, Lewisville Marcus, and Little Elm, while Allen, McKinney, McKinney Boyd, Plano, Plano East, Plano West, Princeton, Prosper, and Prosper Rock Hill make up 6-6A.

5A 
Enrollment: 1,315-2,274

— Dallas Highland Park, Fort Worth Paschal, Fort Worth Chisholm Trail, and Keller Fossil Ridge drop down from 6A.

— Defending 4A Division I state champion Anna moves up to 5A based on enrollment, along with Kaufman. Oak Cliff Faith Family Academy moves to 5A by request.

— 5A now includes 252 schools.

— District 4-5A Division II now features four teams that were among the area’s best last season, with Anna, Melissa, Frisco Emerson, and Lucas Lovejoy. Frisco Memorial, Frisco Liberty, Denison, and Prosper Walnut Grove complete the district.

— Twelve-time state champion Aledo remains in 5A Division I after rumors of a move to 6A. The Bearcats are part of District 3-5A Division I with Azle, Denton, Denton Ryan, Granbury, Keller Fossil Ridge, Birdville, North Richland Hills, Richland, and White Settlement Brewer.

Enrollment: 545-1,314

Due to enrollment, Dallas Kimball, Fort Worth Southwest, and Lake Dallas drop down from 5A.

— Fort Worth Young Men’s Leadership and Fort Worth Young Women’s Leadership move down to 3A.

— Dallas Carter rejoins other Dallas schools after spending the last few years in a district of teams located in the north suburbs (Celina, Frisco Panther Creek, etc.).

— Celina and Frisco Panther Creek are now members of District 7-4A Division I and will face Aubrey, Lake Dallas, Nevada Community, Paris, and Sulphur Springs.

— There are now 217 4A schools.
