About five hours after decommitting from the University of Louisville football program, 2023 five-star running back Rueben Owens announced his commitment to Texas A&M.

Owens made the announcement on Twitter on Wednesday night, tweeting a graphic of himself in an Aggie uniform.

“This has been a journey, but it’s MY journey,” Owens said in the tweet. “God has blessed me with a gift, and I am THANKFUL.”

Owens added, “Nobody truly knows what this process is like unless you have been through it. This is a business, as we can all see.”

Referring to how others have taken the news, the new Aggie said, “People root for you when you go to a school they want you to, then flip on you when you decide different.”

He offered some advice, saying, “For the recruits in the future, don’t let anyone get in your head or change who you are. Do what is best for you and your family. Do your own research, and stay true to yourself. Gig ’em.”

Owens is a senior running back from El Campo (Texas) High School. CBS Sports affiliate 247Sports ranked him as the top running back in the 2023 recruiting class. He was also ranked as the third-best recruit in Texas and 20th-best nationally.

In his high school career, Owens has rushed for over 7,000 yards and 100 touchdowns, including 2,989 rushing yards and 46 touchdowns in 2021. This season, the senior has 1,781 yards and 25 touchdowns

The 5-foot-11-inch, 200-pound running back committed to Louisville on June 20, 2022, but backed out of his commitment after head coach Scott Satterfield left the program for the head coaching job at the University of Cincinnati.

Satterfield was promptly replaced by Purdue head coach and Louisville native Jeff Brohm earlier this week; many Louisville recruits have decommitted since.

Owens is a significant addition for the Aggies, who lost a multitude of players to the transfer portal this week, including former four-star running back L.J. Johnson. They also lost first-team All-SEC running back Devon Achane to the NFL Draft.

The Texas A&M 2023 recruiting class now ranks among the top 20 nationally, according to the major recruiting outlets. Owens is the second five-star player to join the 12-man class.

The Aggies finished the 2022 recruiting cycle with the nation’s top class.
