Aside from a single by Corey Seager that scored Eli White in the bottom of the first inning, the Rangers did not put up much of a fight on May 14. The visiting Red Sox once again blistered them, 11-3, in a week where Texas compiled a 2-5 record and dropped to 13-19 on the year.

“We didn’t do much in anything today,” Ranger skipper Chris Woodward said after the loss. “They came out swinging. It put some pressure on us, and you know we made some mistakes obviously, and they made us pay.”

Boston Red Sox scored runs in six of nine innings in the game, stacking up fourteen hits and exploding in the top of the second after Seager knotted the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first. Glenn Otto made his 10th career start on the mound for the Texas Rangers and, after yielding a first-inning homer, got shelled in the second, allowing four runs on three hits while walking two, with the big shot being a Rafael Devers two-run homer.

Otto, the 26-year-old righty, lasted just four innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits while walking and striking out four. Otto dropped to 1-1 on the season after the outing.

“We needed Glenn to try to get him through five innings there, trying to save the bullpen, save some guys that hopefully wouldn’t have to pitch today, and obviously didn’t work out that way,” Woodard said of his starter.

The Rangers would send a total of five pitchers to the bump in the contest, Josh Sborz (one inning, two hits, one earned run, and two strikeouts), Matt Moore (two innings, one hit, and one K), Dennis Santana (one inning, one hit and one unearned run), and Brett Martin (one inning, two hits, and one run) handled mop-up duties for Texas in the blowout.

Offensively, Boston Red Sox starter Rich Hill, a 42-year-old lefty, limited Texas to three runs (two of them earned) on seven hits while striking out four. The Red Sox got three perfect innings from their relievers following Hill’s exit in the bottom of the fourth.

Texas was able to post a three-spot on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh when Kole Calhoun belted in Nick Solak and Andy Ibanez, who reached on singles ahead of his at-bat.

The Rangers will look to avoid being swept by the visiting Boston Red Sox squad on Sunday, May 15, at Globe Life Field in Arlington. The first 10,000 guests through the gate will receive a 50th Anniversary Rangers Oven Mitt on Military Appreciation Day. Tickets can be found here for the 1:35 p.m. game.
