Hundreds of soccer fans in Ontario helped set a new world record by participating in the largest game of human foosball ever staged, an event designed to build excitement for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The record-setting match took place on May 23 at Humber Polytechnic’s Lakeshore Campus West in Etobicoke, where 254 participants donned brightly colored soccer jerseys and took their places on a custom-built field modeled after the classic tabletop game.
Organized by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, the event celebrated the upcoming World Cup, which Canada, Mexico, and the United States will host. The corporation is an official supporter of Toronto’s role as a host city for the tournament.
Participants gripped oversized horizontal poles and moved together across a 150-by-68-foot pitch while attempting to kick a soccer ball into giant goals. Despite the rainy, chilly weather, players remained enthusiastic throughout the match, laughing, cheering, and working together in pursuit of their goals.
The atmosphere was energized by live entertainment, including a drumline, brass band, DJ, and commentators who encouraged players and spectators throughout the event.
Guinness World Records confirmed the attempt met the requirements for a new record. Adjudicator Chloe McCarthy verified that the event surpassed the minimum threshold of 251 participants needed to establish the mark. The final score was 12-9.
“Soccer is about teamwork, energy and shared experience, and a human foosball Guinness World Records attempt brings those elements to life in a fun and unforgettable way,” said Neil Lumsden, according to Guinness World Records.
The event was held in partnership with Ontario Soccer and included efforts to support grassroots soccer programs. Organizers pledged donations to fund mentorship opportunities and training for thousands of coaches and referees across the province.
Officials said the record attempt was intended not only to generate enthusiasm for the World Cup but also to celebrate community involvement in the sport.
The achievement highlights Ontario’s preparations for the global tournament and showcases the province’s growing excitement as Canada prepares to welcome teams and fans from around the world in 2026.
