The Google search engine has greatly influenced the internet since it debuted in 1998, allowing people to gain knowledge at the drop of a hat.

It has also given rise to trends throughout all industries, including sports. Here are some of the top sports-related searches worldwide for 2023.

Athletes

1. Damar Hamlin (American Football)

2. Kylian Mbappé (Soccer)

3. Travis Kelce (American Football)

4. Ja Morant (Basketball)

5. Harry Kane (Soccer)

6. Novak Djokovic (Tennis)

7. Carlos Alcaraz (Tennis)

8. Rachin Ravindra (Cricket)

9. Shubman Gill (Cricket)

10. Kyrie Irving (Basketball)

There are four U.S.-based athletes in the top 10, while the remaining six are international. Hamlin began the year in the news because of an early health scare on the field during a Monday night football game, and many have continued to track his journey as he returned to the field. Kelce has seen a rise in popularity while dating Taylor Swift, while Ja Morant has seen his share of off-the-court struggles in the past year. Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving also made the list.

The addition of Lionel Messi, perhaps the most popular soccer player in the world, helped Inter Miami on and off the pitch and probably led to more searches involving the team. It’s no surprise to see the Lakers among the top searched-for teams, and the Texas Rangers made the cut after winning their first-ever World Series.

New York’s Madison Square Garden was the only American arena on the list, with several European soccer stadiums claiming spots. In addition to being the home playing venue for the New York Rangers and the New York Knicks, MSG has also hosted many concerts, comedy tours, and college basketball tournaments in the past year, while Wembley Stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium also doubled as hosting venues for the NFL’s International Series.
