A collision between two safety vehicles at Kennedale Speedway Park on Saturday night killed one official and seriously injured another, prompting organizers to postpone the remainder of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Cowtown Classic.

The incident occurred while crews were responding to a sprint car driven by Marcos Thomas that flipped as it entered the track before the start of the race. The second night of the World of Outlaws event — the series’ only stop in Texas this year — was postponed as authorities investigated.

“The World Racing Group issued a statement Sunday morning: “While officials were responding to an incident at Kennedale Speedway Park Saturday night, two emergency vehicles collided, resulting in a serious injury to one official and a fatal injury to another. There is an ongoing investigation of the incident.

The remainder of the event was postponed. Everybody in the racing community, and those affected, appreciates your thoughts and prayers.”

An earlier notice from the group said the night’s program was postponed “due to a medical emergency.” Thomas reportedly did not suffer any injuries when his sprint car flipped.

World of Outlaws later identified the deceased official as Billy Hurts, a career firefighter and EMT who had been involved in the safety and rescue of Sprint Car drivers for more than 23 years.

“Beyond his professionalism, Billy exemplified what it meant to be a good person, always putting others before himself,” said Brian Carter, World Racing Group CEO. “He dedicated his life to ensuring the safety of every racer, making their well-being his main priority. And beyond the track, his kindness shone further with every interaction, quickly becoming a friendly face to everyone he met.”

“The entire World Racing Group family is deeply saddened by his loss,” Carter added. “We are grateful for the overwhelming support the racing community has shown. Please continue to keep everyone affected in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Safety official Jerry Myers, who was injured in the incident, was reported to be in stable condition.

Out of respect for the families, track officials asked attendees not to share photos or videos from the scene.

Drivers and teams offered condolences.

Carson Macedo said, “Please keep the World of Outlaws family in your thoughts and prayers after last night’s horrible incident. Praying hard for the officials, their families, and everyone involved.”

Stenhouse Jr. with Marshall Racing added, “Our hearts are with the families, friends, and racing community during this heartbreaking time.”

The World of Outlaws series is scheduled to continue at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Oklahoma, on Friday, March 20.
