The Dallas Wings clinched the sixth Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) playoff spot with their 86-77 victory over the New York Liberty on Monday, leaving two spots remaining in the league’s playoffs. This marks the second consecutive year the Wings have made the playoffs.
Guard Marina Mabrey led Dallas with a career-high 31 points, helping the team secure its fifth consecutive win and bringing their season record to 17 wins and 16 losses. The last time the Wings won five straight games was the 2018 season.
Dallas joins Chicago, Las Vegas, Connecticut, Seattle, and Washington in the playoffs. There are still five teams in contention for the remaining two playoff berths.
The WNBA’s playoff system has changed this year. It will consist of the top eight teams playing with no byes.
Every team will begin to play in the first round with the standard bracket format, which has the No. 1 seed vs. the No. 8 seed, the No. 2 seed vs. the No. 7 seed, the No. 3 seed vs. the No. 6 seed, and the No. 4 seed vs. the No. 5 seed. The bracket will not be re-seeded after the initial round.
First-round playoff games will take place August 17-18.
The Wings still have three games remaining in the regular season, including another matchup at home with New York on Wednesday, August 10, and road games against Phoenix and Los Angeles.
With a win against New York on Wednesday, Dallas will become the No. 6 seed in the playoffs.
“In that locker room, we knew that we had the opportunity to make the playoffs for the second year in a row, but we want to go deeper. We want to finish sixth, and once the playoff starts, it’s a new season. Anything can happen.” Wings head coach Vickie Johnson said after the win on Monday.
Last season, Chicago was 16-16 in the regular season and the No.6 seed in the playoffs, yet went on to win the WNBA championship.
The Wings franchise has finished at .500 or better only once since relocating from Detroit after the 2009 season. That was in 2015 in Tulsa.
The team, previously named the Shock while in Detroit and Tulsa, relocated to Dallas in 2016.
It will be the Wings’ fourth playoff appearance in franchise history, but they have yet to win a postseason game.
