Aside from a 3-for-4 day at the dish from Rangers Kole Calhoun — which lifts his season batting average above .200 — Texas was throttled by the Boston Red Sox on May 13 at Globe Life Field in Arlington by a 7-1 tally.

Calhoun, a 34-year-old lefthanded-hitting right fielder, accounted for all but one of the four hits in the game and scored the Rangers’ only run of the day following his triple in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The rest of the Rangers combined to go 1-for-27 (.037) as Nathanial Lowe was the only other member of the Texas club to earn a hit.

Boston Red Sox righty Nick Pivetta pitched a dandy on the day, throwing seven innings, allowing just three hits and one earned in his first win of the year (1-4).

“I’m just trying to focus on competing in the zone,” Pivetta told MLB.com following the victory. “My stuff plays in the zone. I have a good curveball, a good slider, the [splitter] is coming along really well. So, just focusing on those aspects and not trying to get too much outside of myself and try to do too much like I was.”

Kutter Crawford handled mop-up duties in the Red Sox blowout, earning a hold after tossing two innings in which he gave up one hit, walked one, and fanned one.

Dane Dunning was on the bump for the Rangers and was pulled after 5.2 innings after allowing five earned runs on six hits while walking two and striking out five.

Texas used three relievers in the loss — Brett Martin, Garret Richards, and Josh Sborz — who combined to throw 3.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out three.

The Rangers dropped to 13-18 in the season, putting them in fourth place in the AL West, eight games behind the first-place Astros, and 7.5 games behind the Angels, who come to town following the Boston series.

Game two of the three-game set against the Boston Red Sox is in Arlington on Saturday, May 14, starting at 6:05 p.m. The Rangers will celebrate the Viva Tejas Event Series to “celebrate Hispanic culture and bring our fans together throughout the season” during the Saturday matchup.
