OBITUARY

Master Sergeant James Edgar Shaw, Sr. was born January 1940 to John and Carrie Shaw of Marlin, Texas. The fourth of five children, James was destined throughout his life for service, leadership, and excellence.  He acknowledged and accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized in 1952 at the Bernard St. Church of Christ in Marlin, Texas. James was educated through Booker T. Washington Public School and decided early to embarked on a journey to make a difference in the world by enlisting in the United States Marine Corp.

James served as a Private, Lance Corporal, Corporal, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Gunnery Sergeant and Master Sergeant.  During his long and distinguished military career, James conducted training, led platoons and operations worldwide. Some tours included Cuba, Korea, Vietnam, Okinawa, Japan, Philippines, Guam, Dominican Republic, Hawaii, and numerous stateside assignments.

He also became a historical trailblazer by being the first African American recruiter in downtown Fort Worth. James retired from the Marines with over 20 years of service and after retiring from the military, he also retired from the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier with 20 years of service.

A man of honor and integrity Bro. Shaw was a profound leader throughout his life while being a faithful servant. He was the epitome of leadership in the church and served as active participant of singing, praying, scripture reciting, baptizing, counseling, teacher of various ages on Sunday & Wednesday night bible class, financial secretary, treasurer and last but not least, an Elder. (1 Timothy 5:17)

 

Elder James Shaw, Sr. will always be remembered as having the spirit of a warrior, the heart of a servant and his legacy of leadership, love and service has touched many lives and will be greatly missed.

 

To cherish his memory, James leaves behind his wife of nearly 50 years, Barbara; his daughter, Keishea (Kenneth) Mack; his son, James E. Shaw, Jr. (Valree); and his beloved grandchildren, Kennedi Mack, Naomi Shaw & Phillip James Shaw. Also, to cherish his memory, is his sister, Bertha Barnes of Fort Worth, Texas; brother, Walter Archie of Texarkana, Arkansas; a special sister-in-law, Jill Cobb of San Diego, California; a special cousin, Bettie Johnson of Marlin, Texas; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.
