Obituary for Dr. Robert Morris Kuhne

Dr. Robert Morris Kuhne, longtime Richardson, TX OB/GYN and beloved family patriarch, passed away on Friday, May 21, 2021. As one of the first OB/GYNs to practice in Richardson, TX, Bob was highly respected by his peers and adored by his thousands of patients. Cherished by his family and friends, Bob lived life to the fullest.

Bob was born in Hugo, OK to Robert and Bordetta Kuhne and moved to McKinney, TX at ten where he assisted his father at their Firestone store. At McKinney High School, Bob was a 4-sport lettermen, excelling at basketball and earning a scholarship to the University of Oklahoma. At OU, he narrowed his focus from basketball to pre-med and met the love of his life, Joan Lunsford. Bob and Joan’s 67 year marriage began in 1954 while they were still students at OU. Upon graduation, Bob and Joan moved to Dallas where Bob earned a degree from UT Southwestern Medical School while Joan completed her music studies at SMU and gave birth to their first of three children. After completing an internship at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL, Bob served two years as an Air Force flight surgeon. The family moved to Irving, TX while Bob completed his residency at Parkland Hospital, training under the guidance of Dr. Jack Pritchard, “Father of Modern Obstetrics”. During his residency, Bob and Joan had their second child. Once his residency was complete, Bob established one of the first OB/GYN practices in Richardson, TX. The practice thrived, their third child was born, and they built their home on Shenandoah Place where they lived for the next 52 years.

Bob embraced all that life had to offer. In addition to being a respected and dedicated physician, Bob loved his family and rarely missed a game, recital or family gathering. He served as a Deacon at his church. He and Joan enjoyed traveling around the world together and he was a voracious reader. Bob’s favorite place was Lake Texoma where he loved to fish with his children and his closest friends, Jo and Charley Gililland. Bob was generous and fun-loving, with an oversized personality that people gravitated toward. He was a master story teller who never let a detail go unexaggerated. He loved to gamble, was a successful racehorse owner, an avid fisherman and hunter. Bob made things fun. He will be missed.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Roberta Dowd; and wife, Joan Kuhne. Survivors include his son, Chris Kuhne; daughter and son in law, Sundi and Kris Nelson; son and daughter in law, Brad and Kristin Kuhne; grandchildren Courtney Johnson (and husband Aaron Johnson), Madison Kuhne, Doak Kuhne, Peyton Halbert, Hudson Halbert, Rob Kuhne, Alex Kuhne, and great grandson Knox Johnson, as well as his sister, Betty Hitchings, his nieces, close friends, hospital, poker and fishing buddies, and his personal caregiver, Tiffany Ellis.

Family will receive visitors at Restland on Greenville Ave on Friday at 3:00pm, with services scheduled for noon on Saturday, May 29th, at St Barnabas Presbyterian Church of Richardson.

Donations in his honor may be made to UT Southwestern Medical School.
