The War Department announced on Tuesday the launch of GenAI.mil, a new artificial intelligence platform designed to bring advanced generative AI tools directly into the hands of U.S. military and civilian personnel.
The first model deployed on the system is Google Cloud’s Gemini for Government, which officials say will serve as the foundation for a larger suite of frontier AI capabilities.
The initiative is part of a broader push to create an “AI-first” workforce across the defense enterprise, following a July directive from President Donald Trump requiring the United States to reach “unprecedented levels of AI technological superiority.” According to the department, AI tools have now been deployed to desktops across the Pentagon and American military installations worldwide.
Platform Aims To Support Military Readiness and Deterrence
The department said Gemini for Government enables “intelligent agentic workflows,” rapid experimentation, and an AI-driven culture shift intended to strengthen U.S. digital and battlefield dominance. Officials described the tool as an embodiment of American innovation, placing advanced analytical and creative capabilities inside the daily operations of U.S. defense personnel.
“There is no prize for second place in the global race for AI dominance,” said Emil Michael, Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering. “AI is America’s next Manifest Destiny, and we’re ensuring that we dominate this new frontier.”
The system was developed by the AI Rapid Capabilities Cell within the War Department’s Office of Research & Engineering. The department said the platform supports its broader goals of rebuilding military strength, restoring deterrence, and reviving the “warrior ethos.”
Hegseth: AI Will Be Embedded Into Daily Combat Operations
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said the new platform marks a shift in how the department integrates technology into military operations.
“We are pushing all of our chips in on artificial intelligence as a fighting force,” Hegseth said. “AI tools present boundless opportunities to increase efficiency, and we are thrilled to witness AI’s future positive impact across the War Department.”
He added that the department is “tapping into America’s commercial genius” as it embeds generative AI into its routine planning and operational processes.
Training and Security Measures Built Into GenAI.mil
The department is offering no-cost training for all War Department employees to build confidence and competency in AI use. Officials emphasized that all tools available on GenAI.mil are certified for Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and Impact Level 5 (IL5), making them suitable for operational environments.
Gemini for Government incorporates natural-language interaction, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and grounding in Google Search to help ensure more reliable outputs and reduce the risk of AI hallucinations, according to the release.
Part of the Administration’s Broader AI Push
The White House’s AI Action Plan, announced earlier this year, directed federal agencies to bring commercial-grade AI capabilities into government operations. The War Department said additional world-class AI models will be added to the platform over time, making them available to all civilians, contractors, and service members.
The department described GenAI.mil as a cornerstone of the nation’s AI strategy and “an indispensable strategic imperative” for maintaining global military leadership.
“Every warfighter will wield frontier AI as a force multiplier,” the department said, calling the launch another step in “America’s AI revolution.”
