American voters are split right down the middle over whether their taxpayer dollars should continue to be spent on Ukraine’s military defense, according to a new poll.

The Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll for the month of July found that precisely 50% of respondents said they support “providing more funding to Ukraine to fight Russia’s invasion of the country,” while 50% said they oppose it.

When broken down by party affiliation, the survey found that 64% of Democrats support continuing to give taxpayer money to Ukraine for its war effort. In comparison, 37% of Republicans and 47% of independents oppose it.

According to the poll, Americans hold mixed opinions on Ukraine as a whole, with 51% of American voters saying they have a favorable view of the country and 27% saying they have an unfavorable view. Meanwhile, the remaining 24% said they had no opinion or claimed to have never heard of the country.

As previously reported by The Dallas Express, the Biden administration confirmed last week that the controversial cluster bomb munitions it sent to Ukraine are being deployed against Russian forces.

President Biden previously claimed he was sending Ukraine the bombs because its military was running out of ammunition.

“They are using them appropriately. They’re using them effectively and they are actually having an impact on Russia’s defensive formations and Russia’s defensive maneuvering,” said National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby. “I think I can leave it at that.”

Less than half of Americans approve of Biden’s management of foreign affairs as a whole, according to the Harvard CAPS/Harris poll. Since he took office, Biden’s approval rating on the subject fluctuated between 35% and 45%, measuring 42% in July.

However, foreign policy is not at the forefront of the American voter’s mind. According to the poll, only 4% of respondents said foreign policy is the “most important [issue] facing the country today.”

Americans are more concerned about the economy and inflation.

As previously reported by The Dallas Express, the poll found that American voters view inflation as the top issue facing the nation. Furthermore, the poll said that the overall “perception of the U.S. economy remains poor.”
