The U.S. Embassy in London issued a security alert on May 1, 2026, urging American citizens in the United Kingdom to remain vigilant after the UK government raised its national terrorism threat level to “SEVERE.”

The alert follows the April 29 stabbing attack in Golders Green, a north London area with a large Jewish population, which authorities declared a terrorist incident. The threat elevation signals that a terrorist attack is now considered highly likely, per Counter Terrorism Policing.

On April 30, the UK’s Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre raised the national threat level from “substantial” to “SEVERE.” Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed the change, citing a broader rise in Islamist and extreme right-wing terrorist threats, per The Guardian. The decision came one day after the Golders Green attack.

In the attack on April 29, a 45-year-old man, identified in reports as Essa Suleiman, a British national born in Somalia, stabbed two Jewish men aged 76 and 34 on Highfield Avenue in Golders Green. Police treated the incident as terrorism. The suspect was arrested at the scene after turning the knife on officers and has been charged with attempted murder. He had reportedly been released from a psychiatric hospital shortly before the attack and had prior contact with authorities.

The stabbings occurred amid a series of recent incidents targeting Jewish sites in London, including arson attacks on Hatzolah ambulances and other Jewish institutions. Counter Terrorism Policing noted a gradual increase in threats over time.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited Golders Green on April 30 to meet with emergency responders. He faced heckling from protesters shouting slogans including “Keir Starmer, Jew harmer,” reported the BBC. Starmer condemned the attack as “abhorrent” antisemitism and called on the public to recognize the anxiety in the Jewish community.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla concluded a four-day state visit to the United States on April 30, departing from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. While in New York during the trip, the King was kept fully informed of the Golders Green attack.

Buckingham Palace stated that His Majesty is “naturally deeply concerned, in particular about the impact on the Jewish community.” Queen Camilla returned to the UK following the U.S. visit, while the King proceeded to Bermuda for scheduled engagements.

No further public comments from the royals regarding the increase in the threat level have been issued as of May 1.

The U.S. Embassy alert advises citizens to stay alert in public places such as schools, hospitals, churches, tourist locations, and transportation hubs. It recommends varying travel routes, keeping a low profile, reviewing personal security plans, and reporting suspicious activity to local authorities. Americans should monitor local news and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).

This marks the second major U.S. Embassy security notice in recent weeks. On April 24, the embassy warned of increased caution near Jewish and American institutions due to prior attacks and threats.

May 1 coincides with International Workers’ Day, when demonstrations are planned in London and globally. UK authorities and the U.S. Embassy have not directly linked specific May Day events to the heightened threat, but the alert urges awareness of local events.

MI5 provides additional details on UK threat levels. The current “SEVERE” designation is the second-highest level, below only “CRITICAL,” which indicates an attack is expected imminently.

U.S. citizens seeking assistance can contact the U.S. Embassy in London at +(44) (0) 207-499-9000 or [email protected]. Additional support is available through U.S. consulates in Edinburgh and Belfast or the State Department’s Consular Affairs at 888-407-4747.

Officials emphasize that the rise stems from multiple factors rather than a single incident.
