Turning Point USA is sharply criticizing a Christian university in California for revoking official recognition of its TPUSA chapter under a newly adopted policy restricting student groups labeled “religiously, ideologically, and politically driven.”
As previously reported by The Dallas Express, Vanguard University in Costa Mesa informed student chapter president Sadie Burnett that the organization would lose its status on campus. In a Dec. 2 Substack post, Burnett said administrators were unable to give consistent definitions for what qualifies as an ideological or political organization, even as several racial and cultural clubs continue to operate with full recognition.
TPUSA Issues Strong Response
Turning Point USA has now issued a formal response condemning the school’s decision.
“It is deeply disappointing to see a Christian university distance itself from student groups it considers politically or ideologically driven. Charlie’s mission has long emphasized encouraging Christians to live out their faith actively, both within their churches and in the public square,” TPUSA said in a statement to The Dallas Express.
“Institutions tasked with shaping the next generation of Christian professionals should be cultivating thoughtful engagement, not restricting it.”
The organization also suggested Vanguard’s move reflects a broader trend among Christian campuses distancing themselves from conservative student groups.
“Vanguard is unfortunately not the first Christian university to cowardly deny a TPUSA chapter, and sadly, will most likely not be the last. However, they can change their decision to approve our group as they have in the past, and be a beacon of strength to other like minded institutions,” TPUSA said.
University Silent
The Dallas Express reached out to Vanguard University for comment but did not receive a response.
