The U.S. Department of the Interior marked Patriots’ Day on April 20, 2026, honoring the site where the American Revolution began.
The official account shared: “At Minute Man National Historical Park, you can stand on the very ground where the American Revolution began, where men fired the famous ‘shot heard ’round the world’ 251 years ago today. The park honors the everyday people who lived through extraordinary times defending their ideals of liberty and self-determination. A nation was being born, and they lit the spark.”

The post highlighted the National Park Service site in Massachusetts on the 251st anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Patriots’ Day, observed annually in Massachusetts and Maine, commemorates the opening clashes of the Revolutionary War on April 19, 1775.
Minute Man National Historical Park preserves the landscape of those first shots between colonial militia and British forces. Established in 1959, the park includes the North Bridge in Concord, where the “shot heard ’round the world” occurred, as well as battle roads and historic structures. It attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors yearly to learn about the events that led to American independence.
The Department of the Interior, which oversees the National Park Service, manages more than 85 million acres of national park lands across the United States. As of 2026, the National Park System includes 433 units. Visitation reached record levels in recent years, exceeding 323 million annual recreation visits before the COVID-19 pandemic and rebounding strongly afterward.
Under President Donald Trump’s second term, the department has pursued initiatives focused on efficiency, energy production, and stewardship of public lands. On April 2, 2026, Interior announced a strategic initiative to improve resource management and boost American energy independence. Secretary Doug Burgum has led efforts, including staff reductions through voluntary deferred-resignation and early-retirement programs. The department offered multiple rounds of such incentives in 2026, following prior workforce adjustments.
The FY2027 budget proposal for the Department of the Interior requested $15.9 billion in discretionary authority, a decrease from prior enacted levels, while proposing a new Presidential Capital Stewardship Program with $10 billion in mandatory funding for projects in and around Washington, D.C. It also called for the unification of wildland fire responsibilities and other streamlining measures.
Public lands under Interior jurisdiction generate significant economic activity. The outdoor recreation economy, supported by national parks and other federal lands, contributes hundreds of billions annually to the U.S. economy. Energy development on federal lands has produced record revenues in recent periods, including a $460.9 million disbursement to Gulf-producing states announced in March 2026.
Minute Man National Historical Park continues to serve as a key location for education on the nation’s founding, with ranger programs and trails dedicated to the events of April 1775.
