According to Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-TX), the U.S. Capitol police took his comments out of context when he was flagged as a “potential danger” leading up to the January 6, 2021 protests.
“They completely ignored my history,” Gohmert told The Dallas Express. “I have repeatedly said that we need protests when things are not going according to the law, but it’s got to be peaceful protests. We have to follow the example of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. That’s [a] peaceful protest.”
As previously reported, a January 3 intelligence assessment stated that Gohmert appeared to encourage violence last year when he said on Newsmax-TV, “Letting the will of the voters stand would mean the end of our republic, the end of the experiment in self-government. But bottom line is, the court is saying, ‘We’re not going to touch this. You have no remedy – basically, in effect, the ruling would be that you gotta go to the streets and be as violent as Antifa and BLM.'”
At the time, Gohmert, an attorney, had filed a lawsuit against Vice President Mike Pence challenging the 2020 election outcome, but a federal judge dismissed the complaint.
“As a person who has concentrated in studying history since high school and majored in history in college, when the institutions created to resolve disputes, civilly and amicably, refuse to take up those cases that they have responsibility for, then they send a message to the people that you have to go to the streets like BLM and Antifa,” Gohmert said in an interview. “That is not an endorsement of violence. I don’t want violence. I’m not going to participate in it, but it’s an observation and hopefully, people on the Supreme Court will wake up, especially in cases where they have original jurisdiction. You don’t even have to go to a lower court.”
The U.S. Supreme Court rejected petitions that challenged the 2020 presidential elections that unseated former President Donald Trump, including a case filed by Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA), who alleged that all of the state’s mail-in ballots were illegal, according to CNBC.
“It could have helped if the Supreme Court had accepted those cases but I also think that if the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi had allowed the National Guard to come help, as Trump offered to do, there would never have been anyone that went into the capital,” Gohmert said. “It goes back to raising the question that the Speaker refuses to answer. What did she know? When did she know it?”
Gohmert made the comments at a Moms for Liberty presentation of the film Mind Polluters at the American Experience Museum in Irving, Texas, this week. The documentary alleges that children in public schools are being groomed for pornography, pedophilia, transgenderism, and other sexual activities.
Moms for Liberty is a national grassroots organization that advocates for parental rights. Gohmert is campaigning to be the next Texas Attorney General.
“I’ve had Capitol police tell me they were briefed on the evening of January 5, that there were people who were not going to be Trump supporters, who were coming to create violence, and they were going to be wearing red MAGA Trump stuff,” Gohmert said. “They were going to be there to stir up violence. They said they were briefed on that the evening of January 5. The Speaker should have been advised of that. Why would she not want the National Guard to come when the Capitol police themselves knew there were going to be people there intentionally to stir up violence?”
Regarding whether the Select Committee to Investigate the Attack on the U.S. Capitol would subpoena him, Gohmert said he hadn’t heard from the commission so far.
“I don’t know their plans but I know them and I know they do not want to bring up anything that makes Democrats look bad, no matter how important it was to January 6,” he added. “They’re not interested in getting the truth. They’re interested in using a political football.”
