Oxford University Press declared “rage bait” its Word of the Year for 2025, citing a threefold surge in usage of the term that describes online content deliberately crafted to provoke anger and boost engagement.

The two-word phrase beat out finalists “aura farming” and “biohack” in a public vote that drew more than 30,000 responses before Oxford lexicographers made the final call.

Defined as “online content deliberately designed to elicit anger or outrage by being frustrating, provocative, or offensive, typically posted in order to increase traffic to or engagement with a particular web page or social media content,” rage bait has moved from niche internet slang to mainstream discourse amid heated debates over digital well-being and platform algorithms.

Casper Grathwohl, president of Oxford Languages, said the selection reflects a broader shift in online behavior.

“Where last year’s choice, brain rot, captured the mental drain of endless scrolling, rage bait shines a light on the content purposefully engineered to spark outrage and drive clicks,” Grathwohl said. “And together, they form a powerful cycle where outrage sparks engagement, algorithms amplify it, and constant exposure leaves us mentally exhausted.”

First recorded on Usenet in 2002 to describe road-rage provocation, the term later evolved to critique viral tweets and polarizing posts. Oxford noted its growing use in newsrooms and among creators to call out performative politics and deliberate misinformation.

Other major dictionaries also picked technology-flavored terms for 2025, with Collins choosing “vibe coding” and Cambridge selecting “parasocial.”
