Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Qamar Javed Bajwa called for “immediate cessation” of the war between Russia and Ukraine during a speech on April 2.

During the speech, Chief of Army Staff Bajwa said Russia’s invasion, which has left thousands dead, is “very unfortunate” and a “huge tragedy.”

“Pakistan doesn’t believe in camp politics and wants excellent relations with all countries, especially the United States, the European Union, China, Russia, and others,” Chief of Army Staff Bajwa said.

In late February, Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine, driving millions to escape to neighboring countries. His actions drew widespread international censure including sanctions from the U.S. and its Western allies.

According to The Hill, Bajwa’s remarks come after Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan earlier refused to officially condemn Putin’s conduct after receiving pressure from world governments.

“What are your thoughts about us? Are we your slaves… that we will do everything you say?” said Prime Minister Khan in response to a letter urging Pakistan to support a resolution condemning Moscow’s attack last month, as reported by The Hill.
