James Copenhaver, one of three people shot during the 2024 assassination attempt against then-presidential candidate Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has died. He was 76.
Copenhaver died Wednesday, September 23, two years after he was seriously wounded in the July 13, 2024, shooting. Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday said Copenhaver died from complications stemming from those wounds. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the death but did not publicly list a cause.
Copenhaver’s family said he died surrounded by loved ones. They described him as a devoted husband, father and grandfather and a veteran whose commitment to the country remained an important part of his life.
Wounded During Butler Rally
Copenhaver was among several people struck when gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire from a nearby rooftop during Trump’s rally.
Copenhaver was shot twice, suffering wounds to his arm and abdomen. One bullet struck his triceps, while another caused severe internal injuries, including damage to his colon. He later experienced nerve damage and other lasting effects from the shooting.
He was hospitalized for about a week before being released.
David Dutch, another rally attendee, was also wounded and survived. Corey Comperatore was killed in the shooting while shielding his family from the gunfire. Trump was grazed on the ear by a bullet.
Copenhaver later recalled the moment the gunfire began during an interview with KDKA-TV.
“I was standing up looking at the Jumbotron behind me, and next thing I know my sleeve has been yanked,” Copenhaver said. He said he heard a gunshot but initially did not realize he had been hit before being struck again.
Family Remembers Copenhaver
“James’s dedication to this great country was a defining part of his life,” the family said in a statement, Fox 4 KDFW reported. “As a veteran, he proudly served our nation in the armed forces, and his love of country never wavered.”
The family also thanked those who had offered prayers and support since Copenhaver was wounded and asked for privacy as they mourned his death.
Trump Offers Condolences
Trump offered his condolences to Copenhaver’s family in a social media post, describing him as “a true American Patriot.” Trump said Copenhaver showed courage after being wounded and praised his determination during the two years that followed the shooting.
House Republicans also expressed condolences, saying Copenhaver endured significant hardship with strength and perseverance.
Other Victims of the Shooting
The July 13, 2024, shooting killed Comperatore and wounded Copenhaver and Dutch. Trump was also wounded, suffering a gunshot injury to his right ear.
Copenhaver’s death comes more than two years after the attack that led to investigations into security and planning failures surrounding the Butler rally.
