A company has recalled more than 80,000 bags of frozen shrimp sold across multiple states after discovering possible radioactive contamination with cesium-137.
Direct Source Seafood LLC issued the recall for products sold under the Market 32 and Waterfront Bistro brands, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
The contamination poses a potential health risk to consumers who purchased the affected shrimp between June and July. While no illnesses have been reported yet, the FDA advises customers to discard or return the products immediately.
The shrimp, imported from Indonesia, may have been exposed to cesium-137 during processing, packing, or shipping. The FDA noted that Cs-137 is “present in the environment at background levels, and at higher levels in water or foods grown, raised, or produced in areas with environmental contamination.”
Market 32 brand shrimp were sold in one-pound bags at Price Chopper stores across six northeastern states. The affected products carry UPC code 0 41735 01358 3 with best-by dates ranging from April 22 to April 27, 2027.
Waterfront Bistro brand shrimp, packaged in two-pound bags, were distributed to Jewel-Osco, Albertsons, Safeway, and Lucky Supermarket stores. These products, bearing UPC code 021130 13224-9, have best-by dates of April 25 or April 26, 2027.
The recall affects stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Colorado, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, North Dakota, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Wyoming.
