U.S. Rep. George Santos (R-NY) was arrested Tuesday and charged with 13 financial crimes.

Santos surrendered to authorities Tuesday morning in New York.

The freshman congressman was indicted on seven counts of wire fraud. Other charges include three counts of money laundering, two counts of making false statements to the House of Representatives, and one count of theft of public funds, the Department of Justice announced Tuesday.

Santos induced supporters to donate to a company under false pretenses, the indictment says.

“Taken together, the allegations in the indictment charge Santos with relying on repeated dishonesty and deception to ascend to the halls of Congress and enrich himself,” U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said in the indictment.

Santos was expected to make a court appearance later Wednesday in Long Island federal court.
