A former Air Canada pilot has been charged after allegedly serving as an airline captain for more than 16 years without holding the required license for the position, according to Canadian authorities.

Peel Regional Police said Geoffrey Wall, 59, of Barrie, Ontario, operated as an airline captain between 2009 and 2025 despite lacking an Airline Transport Pilot License, the certification required to command large commercial passenger aircraft.

Investigators allege Wall flew more than 900 domestic and international flights during that period and used fraudulent licensing documents to misrepresent his qualifications to both Air Canada and Transport Canada.

Deputy Police Chief Nick Milinovich alleged that Wall “has been flying for years misrepresenting himself and his credentials to his employer and regulatory officials using fraudulent licensing documents.”

“This is similar to a doctor that is licensed to practice family medicine but is doing brain surgery in their office,” Milinovich said, per CBS News.

The investigation, known as Project Icarus, began in January after Transport Canada, the federal department responsible for regulating and overseeing Canada’s transportation systems, launched a review of the pilot’s credentials. Authorities said anomalies were discovered during a documentation check and later traced to paperwork presented during a routine operational evaluation at Toronto Pearson International Airport in March 2025.

According to police, evidence obtained through a search warrant and other judicial authorizations indicated that Wall allegedly deceived both Air Canada and the federal aviation regulator regarding his qualifications.

Air Canada confirmed that the pilot held a valid commercial pilot license but did not possess the higher-level certification required to serve as a captain. The airline said he was promoted without the necessary Airline Transport Pilot License and was removed from active duty as soon as the issue was discovered. The matter was voluntarily reported to Transport Canada.

The pilot is no longer employed by the airline.

Police said Wall captained Boeing 767, 777, and 787 aircraft on domestic and international routes before retiring in early 2025. Authorities estimate he earned approximately 2.9 million Canadian dollars during his time as a captain.

Wall faces seven charges, including fraud over $5,000, public mischief, two counts of uttering forged documents and three counts of possession of a counterfeit mark. Police also allege he filed a false report claiming pilot documentation had been stolen.

Investigators described the case as highly unusual.

“Where have you seen something so sensational?” Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah told the Toronto Star. “As I understand, this is a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence — at least to this extent.”

Air Canada said an internal audit found no other cases of licensing non-compliance among its pilots and maintained that passenger safety was not affected.

“Safety was not compromised by this incident because all pilots at Air Canada undergo mandatory recurrent training every six months to validate their flying competency, including a flight check with a certified Transport Canada check-pilot every 12 months,” the airline said in a statement, per The Guardian.

“However, appropriate licensing is an essential layer of the airline industry’s multilayered approach to safety, so Air Canada takes this matter with utmost seriousness.”

The airline declined further comment, citing privacy laws and the ongoing criminal investigation.

Transport Canada has already fined Wall for not possessing the proper license to serve as an aircraft captain.

Transport Minister Steve MacKinnon said federal officials would review the case and make improvements if needed, while emphasizing that the regulatory system ultimately identified the problem.

“I am gratified that we were able to detect this issue and get it dealt with,” MacKinnon said.

Wall is scheduled to appear in court in Brampton, Ontario, on June 29.
