The construction of a Whole Foods Market at a North Texas mixed-use development is expected to be completed by early 2025.
A Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing shows the interior finish-out of the 48,068-square-foot space is scheduled to begin in June with an anticipated January delivery. The estimated construction cost is $8.5 million, and the filing lists Austin-based Cushing Terrell as the design firm.
Whole Foods is the anchor tenant at McKinney’s West Grove — a 54-acre mixed-use development at U.S. 380 and Custer Road. The project from De La Vega Capital and Development will offer 600,000 square feet of retail, office, restaurant, entertainment, and residential space near “a high-income and dense population” in an area that includes Stonebridge Ranch.
West Grove includes more than 400 luxury residences and a two-acre park, D Magazine reported. West Grove, a public-private partnership with McKinney, was designed by San Francisco-based Gensler. The Hub — a neighboring entertainment venue — will feature an event lawn and stage, according to Community Impact.
“West Grove will be designed to bring people and a growing city together,” De La Vega described the new development in a press release in 2022, per Community Impact. “A central green space and a considered mix of open-air, experience-driven retail and restaurant spaces will cultivate a sense of community, where visitors can connect meaningfully with each other and their natural environment. With a mission to nourish people and the planet, Whole Foods Market is the perfect addition to West Grove.”
In January 2023, Business Insider reported that Whole Foods CEO Jason Buechel plans to open at least 30 stores each year, including through new formats. That is in contrast to what parent company Amazon planned at the time — to close more than 60 stores.
Founded more than 40 years ago in Austin, Whole Foods operates more than 500 stores in the U.S., Canada, and the UK, and employs about 105,000 workers.
