McKinney Economic Development Corporation has appointed Michael Kowski as its newest president and CEO.

Kowski takes over from Peter Tokar III, who resigned as the organization’s president and CEO on August 16 after serving five years in the leadership role.

The McKinney Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) is described on its website as “a sales tax-funded, statutory nonprofit corporation dedicated to economic development.”

Kowski was chosen for the role due to his extensive city planning experience, which includes a background in urban development and design, land acquisition, and capital improvement projects, according to a press release from MEDC.

During his time as director of Parks and Recreation for the City of McKinney, Kowski oversaw several major projects including the creation of an $11 million indoor tennis facility at The Courts of McKinney, the $25 million renovation of the McKinney Soccer Complex at Craig Ranch, and the acquisition of 230 acres of parkland within the Painted Tree development.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to lead MEDC in expanding economic opportunities in the city and to promote our great city to national and international audiences,” Kowski said in the August 29 release. “I look forward to attracting new businesses and experiences to our community by showcasing our high quality of life and seizing every opportunity for our continued economic success.”

Kowski is a Certified Urban Designer and a credentialed urban planner with the American Institute of Certified Planners with 16 years of economic development experience.

MEDC did not provide any details about Tokar’s future career plans. Still, in a statement by the Board of Directors, MEDC members expressed gratitude for his leadership over the past five years, particularly his dedication and hard work in helping the organization achieve its long-term goals, grow its community, and align its vision, reported Community Impact.

“We look forward to continued success with Michael Kowski and our MEDC team as he brings his experience in regional economic development and urban planning to our organization,” said Brian Loughmiller, MEDC board chairman, in the news release.

“With his proven track record of project delivery, talent for building relationships, and working knowledge of the City of McKinney as a former Director, we will continue to work effectively with our development partners and City Council to bring quality economic development to our community,” Loughmiller added.

Kowski will take over as president and CEO starting October 1.
