A member of the Mesquite City Council faces a domestic violence charge after his arrest early Thursday, authorities said.

Brandon Murden, who represents District 6, was taken into custody shortly after midnight by the Mesquite Police Department and charged with assault causing bodily injury to a family member, according to jail records. He was released after posting a $2,000 bond.

The identity of the alleged victim was not immediately available.

Murden, a resident of Mesquite since 2009, was elected to the council in 2023, becoming the first black man to hold a seat there. He won reelection in November 2025, and his term is set to expire in 2027.

“The City of Mesquite is aware that a member of the Mesquite City Council was arrested early Thursday morning on a charge alleging domestic violence,” the city said in an emailed statement, KERA reported. “This is a serious matter, and the City is monitoring the situation closely.”

The city added that it remains committed to community safety and that operations will proceed normally. Officials declined further comment, citing respect for the legal process and the privacy of those involved.

“The City will defer to the legal process to allow all facts to be established through due process,” the statement said, per WFAA.
