Two Texas sheriff’s deputies are being hailed as heroes after racing an unconscious toddler to a hospital.
Dramatic bodycam footage shows the Nacogdoches County officers performing lifesaving aid on the 18-month-old during their high-speed dash through rural East Texas.
The December rescue highlights the split-second decisions law enforcement makes when ambulances are too far away.
Deputies responded to a frantic 911 call on December 14 in Woden, Texas. The caller reported the toddler was unconscious and turning blue.
Knowing an ambulance would take too long to reach the rural property, the deputies loaded the child into their patrol car. Bodycam footage shows them speeding down country roads while attempting to resuscitate the infant.
The officers delivered the toddler to the emergency room staff within minutes.
The child was later transferred to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston for additional treatment. The Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the toddler has been released and is back home.
Rural communities often face longer emergency response times due to distance. In this case, the deputies’ decision to transport the child themselves saved precious minutes. The doctor on staff at the emergency room said the deputies likely saved the child’s life.
