With the new fiscal year having begun on October 1, homeowners across Dallas-Fort Worth are now subject to new tax property tax rates.

Dallas residents are officially under a new property tax rate of $0.7393. While technically a one-cent reduction in rate, this measure increased the tax burden on Dallas homeowners by a collective $120 million, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.

This property tax increase, along with its accompanying $4.63 billion City budget, was strongly opposed by both Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson and Council Member Cara Mendelsohn.

Other cities across the metroplex also approved new property tax rates for fiscal year 2023-24. Here’s how those rates compare to the City of Dallas.

In the following table, only cities with a population of more than 100,000 are included, and each property tax rate is measured per $100 valuation.

CITY POPULATION NEW PROPERTY TAX RATE (FY23-24) CHANGE FROM PREVIOUS YEAR (FY22-23)
Fort Worth 961,885 $0.6725 4-cent reduction from $0.7125
Arlington 390,399 $0.5898 1-cent reduction from $0.5998
Plano 291,450 $0.4176 No change
Irving 248,931 $0.5891 No change

Grand Prairie 199,395 $0.6600 No change

Mesquite 143,792 $0.6900 ~3.2-cent increase from $0.65814**
Carrollton 132,935 $0.553750 ~0.9-cent reduction from $0.5625
Lewisville 114,170 $0.419079 ~2.4-cent reduction from $0.443301
Richardson 113,613 $0.56095 No change
Allen 109,411 $0.4205 0.07-cent reduction from $0.4212

**The City of Mesquite’s property tax rate has not yet been finalized.

The Mesquite City Council unanimously approved a budget with a property tax rate of $0.69 per $100 valuation. However, because the rate is an increase from the previous fiscal year, Texas law requires the rate to be approved by voters.

A tax rate election for Mesquite will be held on November 7, with early voting taking place from October 23 to November 3. More information about the election can be found here.

Mesquite will be the city with the highest property tax rate in the metroplex aside from Dallas if voters approve the measure. However, even Mesquite’s new tax rate will be almost 5 cents less than Dallas’.

Of the included cities, the one with the lowest property tax rate is Plano. However, as in Dallas, many Plano homeowners will still see increased tax payments due to increasing home values. A resident with a $100,000 home will pay 7.6%, or $21, more per month, according to the Plano Star Courier.

Municipalities are not the only entities that determine the property tax rate of a homeowner, however. Other taxing entities, including the county, school district, colleges, hospitals, and municipal utility districts, also affect the homeowner’s property tax bill.
