An 11-year-old was injured in a shooting Sunday evening on the playground of Opal Smith Elementary School, Crandall police announced.
Officers were dispatched around 7:30 p.m. to the school in the 3000 block of Fletcher Road in the Heartland community after receiving a report of a shooting. They found the child suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg.
The victim was treated at the scene by CareFlite crews and airlifted to the Children’s Hospital in Dallas. Medical staff later told police the injury did not appear life-threatening and that the child was in stable condition.
Police took another 11-year-old into custody, saying they believe the child was the shooter. Investigators described the incident as isolated and involving only the two juveniles. Officials have not said whether the shooting was accidental or intentional and have released no details on how the child obtained the gun.
The Crandall Independent School District notified parents late Sunday night that Opal Smith Elementary would remain open on Monday on a normal schedule. Additional counselors will be available on campus to support students and staff.
Investigators said there is no ongoing threat to students or school employees. Detectives continue to interview witnesses and review evidence.
