Two gas balloon race pilots have been hospitalized after their craft crashed. Both pilots sustained multiple injuries after their balloon crashed into power lines near Crandall.

Polish pilots Krzystotf Zapart and Pjotr Halas, from Swidnica, Poland, were among many competing in the 66th Gordon Bennett gas balloon distance race as part of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

The race features 17 teams from different nations with the goal of flying the longest distance without touching the ground, starting from Albuquerque, New Mexico.

These experienced pilots, part of Polish Team 1, had been the first to take off on October 7 at 8:30 p.m., traveling on winds that angled them toward the DFW metroplex, according to race officials. These pilots would later pass over the metroplex at 12,000 feet and begin descending after.

Festival officials reported that Poland Team 1 was flying over Crandall, Texas, at 7:25 p.m. on October 9 when their craft came into contact with a power line. Locals and first responders arrived shortly after to tend to the crew of the crashed hydrogen balloon.

“Both pilots sustained injuries and were transported to Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas. Mr. Zapart, the lead pilot sustained cuts and burns to his legs and arms, Mr. Halas is being treated for burns and broken bones to his legs and mid-section,” said race officials in a Facebook post. “Both are experienced gas balloon pilots who have logged significant time in gas balloons.”

The team’s chase crew was staged in Wichita Falls at the time of the crash and has since joined the pilots in Dallas.

Officials confirmed weather conditions were favorable at the time of the crash, with fair weather and good visibility. An investigation into the crash is currently underway.

The race continues today, with eight teams still competing.

“Our thoughts are with the gentlemen, their families and friends for a full and complete recovery,” said race officials in their statement.
