Rowlett has been designated a “Film Friendly Texas Community” by the Texas Film Commission, making it the 21st city in the Dallas-Fort Worth area to share that distinction.

“Becoming a part of the Film Friendly Texas program is a strategic move for Rowlett,” Mayor Blake Margolis said in a news release. “It’s an opportunity to showcase our city to a wider audience and to stimulate local economic development. This certification not only highlights our unique landscapes and community spirit but also positions us as a prime location for film productions. We’re ready and excited to collaborate with the film industry and bring new projects to our community.”

Gov. Greg Abbott congratulated Rowlett last Thursday on the designation. More than 175 others across the state have received the same designation.

“Texas is brimming with promise, and I look forward to continuing to work alongside all of our communities to ensure they have the knowledge and tools needed to succeed,” Abbott said in the release.

As previously reported by The Dallas Express, some of the most memorable titles have been filmed in North Texas, including Bonnie and Clyde, Armageddon, Dallas, Walker, Texas Ranger, and The Chosen.

To become certified as a Film Friendly Texas Community, applicants must attend a workshop hosted by the Texas Film Commission, pass filming guidelines, and submit at least five photos of filming locations in their jurisdictions.

According to the governor’s website, $2 billion has been spent, and 183,000 production jobs have been created in Texas since 2007 through the Texas Film Commission’s work.

Other recognizable titles filmed in Texas include Office Space, Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Selena, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, No Country For Old Men, Friday the 13th (2009), True Grit, Hope Floats, and Dazed and Confused.
