Trump Proclaims Jewish American Heritage Month: Encourages A National Sabbath May 15–16

President Donald Trump proclaimed May 2026 as Jewish American Heritage Month.

The announcement, issued on May 4, honors Jewish Americans’ contributions during the nation’s 250th year of independence. Trump highlighted their commitment to faith, family, and freedom.

He cited President George Washington’s 1790 letter to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, Rhode Island.

Washington wrote, “May the Children of the Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other Inhabitants; while everyone shall sit in safety under his own vine and fig tree, and there shall be none to make him afraid.”

The proclamation notes Haym Salomon’s support for the Continental Congress and Founding Fathers during the Revolutionary War. Salomon advocated against tyranny, continued his efforts after British imprisonment, and devoted himself to the American Revolution’s success.

Trump referenced Washington’s additional statement that the United States “gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.” The President pledged to combat violence against Jewish Americans, prosecute offenders, and address antisemitism, particularly on college campuses.

In recognition of the nation’s 250th anniversary and Rededicate 250 — a national jubilee of prayer, praise, and thanksgiving — Trump encouraged a national Sabbath from sundown May 15 to nightfall May 16. People of all backgrounds may gather for rest, reflection, and gratitude.

The month celebrates Jewish Americans’ influence on the nation’s story through religious devotion, learning, and service. Trump called on Americans to join programs, activities, and ceremonies, and to observe their faith and freedom, especially on Shabbat during the 250th year.
