Most Christmases, Dallasites have to settle for dreaming of snow and a white Christmas. Dallas has not had a white Christmas since 2012. Last year, Dallas temperatures hovered around 82°F, the warmest Christmas on record.

This year, Dallas temperatures are expected to dip into the twenties due to an arctic blast. Despite the frigid temperatures, children still will not be able to make their own Frosty the Snowman or even an Olaf.

With just a few ingredients, however, you can make your own snow and give your youngest family members the white Christmas of their dreams. Moreover, faux snow is easy to make, a great STEM activity, and non-toxic. It also requires only a few common household items. Like real snow, the fake snow is moldable, so children can make mini snowmen. Within minutes, you and your children can enjoy the wonders of Christmas snow in the warmth of your home. Here are the instructions from Savvy Sassy Moms:

Directions for Fake Snow

Ingredients

  • 3 cups baking soda
  • 1/2 cup hair conditioner (preferably white)
  • glitter (optional)

Directions

  1. Mix the conditioner and baking soda together in a large bowl.
  2. Snow should resemble wet sand. If it is too wet, add more baking soda. If it is too dry, add more conditioner.
  3. After achieving desired consistency, place it into a bin and have fun!

Tips for extra fun!

  1. Get creative — add beads, pipe cleaners, toothpicks, or beach toys to provide your child with extra activities.
  2. For a fluffier substance, substitute hair conditioner with shaving cream. Instead of crumbly, the “snow” will be airy and doughy.
  3. Baking soda, luckily, is used as a cleaning agent. However, it can stain wood, so cover all wood surfaces with newspaper beforehand. For quick removal, wipe down surfaces and vacuum the excess.

Have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

May your days be merry and bright, and may all your Christmases be white.
