February 1, 2022 marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year and the celebration of the Year of the Tiger. According to History.com, the Lunar New Year begins a calendar year whose months are Moon cycles, based on the lunar calendar, and is primarily celebrated in East and Southeast Asian cultures.

The Dallas-Fort Worth area is celebrating the Lunar New Year this Saturday, February 5, in a big way with food, fireworks, and plenty of fun events.

For a daytime celebration, head to AT&T Discovery District at Jaxson Beer Garden to welcome the Year of the Tiger with a party from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

If you’re into plants, the Texas Triffid Ranch Carnivorous Plant Lunar New Year Open House in Richardson is the event for you. On Saturday, February 5, Texas Triffid Ranch will highlight carnivorous plant species from all over the planet, including Asian Nepenthes, South American Heliamphora, and Australian Cephalotus.

While you are in Richardson, plan on joining in the Annual Chinese New Year Festival in DFW Chinatown. Over twenty Asian restaurants will provide cuisine in the metroplex’s “epicenter of Asian food culture” while dragon and tiger dancers perform. There will be activities for all ages from 10:00 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. DFW Chinatown is located in the Richardson CORE District and can be accessed using the DART bus, which will be rotating between Chinatown and the Arapaho Center Station.

Dallas’ newest Korean Barbeque Steakhouse, Nuri Grill, will also celebrate Lunar New Year with a $29 special tteokguk, a rice cake soup with slices of rice cake, beef, and eggs, a shrimp pancake, and galbi-jjim, or braised short ribs. Reservations are available at nurigrill.com.

Wok Star Chinese will bring in the Lunar New Year starting at 6:00 p.m. with live lion dancers, the Forbidden Dao by Malibu, their Famous Soup Dumplings, and fun giveaways.
