With high school prom season approaching, here is what you need to know about making your own DIY corsage.

Prom is expensive enough as it is. Paying for the tickets and the dress or the tux can all add up very quickly. If you are looking to save a little, you can make your own corsage or your date’s corsage for her.

Usually, corsages are worn on the wrist, though they can also be pinned onto a dress.

First, you will need to buy some flowers. You want to have a statement flower like a lily, a rose, or a carnation accompanied by some accent greenery or baby’s breath.

You will also need floral tape and florist wire to secure the flowers together. These can be obtained at craft stores. Additionally, you will need a ribbon or bracelet of your choice to attach the corsage to the wrist.

To begin assembling, you will first need to cut down the stems to less than one inch and remove any excess leaves or wilted petals.

Next, cover the stems of the statement flowers with florist wire to make them more stable and bendable, and then cover the wire with the floral tape.

Filler flowers do not need to be wrapped in wire. However, they should be trimmed.

Next, it is time to arrange the corsage. Once all the flowers are positioned, wrap them all together using the floral tape.

Now you can cover up the taped portion of the corsage with your choice of ribbon or twine.

You can buy special corsage bracelets that come with bases on which to attach the flowers. Alternatively, you can also hot glue the corsage to the ribbon or a bracelet that you have selected.

Boutonnieres require a similar technique but usually fewer flowers. Rather than dealing with attaching the boutonniere to a bracelet, all you have to do is bring some pushpins to attach the boutonniere to the boy’s suit jacket.
