Canadian filmmaker and director Jean-Marc Vallée, noted for his Academy Award-winning movie Dallas Buyers Club, has died.

Vallée, born in Montreal, earned nine nominations for Canada’s Genie Awards with his 1995 debut feature film, Black List. His 2005 movie C.R.A.Z.Y. won 11 Genies, and his 2009 film Young Victoria received three Oscar nominations, winning for Best Costume Design.

He then hit Hollywood with his 2013 movie, Dallas Buyers Club. Vallée was nominated for “Best Editing” for that film. Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto both earned Oscars for their roles in the film, receiving the accolades of Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.

The following year, Vallée’s film Wild, starring Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern, received two Oscar nominations for Best Actress (Witherspoon) and Best Supporting Actress (Dern).

Vallée then took his talents to television with Big Little Lies, starring Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Shailene Woodley. Vallée won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special.

In April 2021, Vallée and his producing partner, Nathan Ross, signed a deal with HBO and HBO Max.

He was also named an Officer in the National Order in Quebec, an honor awarded to residents of Quebec for conspicuous achievement in their field.

According to Vallée’s representative, Bumble Ward, Vallée was at his cabin in Quebec City at the time of his passing. His cause of death has not been announced to the public.

In a statement, Ross described Vallée as “a true artist and a generous, loving guy.”

Vallée leaves behind two sons, Alex and Émile, and a number of siblings. He was 58.
