A second dose of the updated COVID booster was approved Tuesday for adults 65 and older and people with weakened immune systems.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced those eligible can get a second dose of updated Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna omicron boosters four months after their last dose.

“At this stage, data support simplifying the use of the authorized vaccines, and the agency believes that this approach will help encourage future vaccination,” said Peter Marks, M.D., Ph.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research.

The immunizations could begin as soon as Wednesday when the FDA hands off its recommendation to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC has scheduled a Wednesday meeting with its advisers.
