On Tuesday, Amazon announced that U.S. warehouse employees must wear face masks due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases and the Omicron variant.
Amazon sent a notice to workers informing them that masks are required even for those fully vaccinated or residing in areas that do not have a mandate in place.
In the opening, it states, “Your health and safety are of the utmost importance to us. In response to the rapid spread of the COVID-19 Omicron variant in the U.S. and guidance from public health authorities and our own medical experts, face coverings are again required for everyone.”
A spokesperson with Amazon confirmed the notice to The Dallas Express.
Amazon’s decision to reinforce the mask order is due to workers being in the middle of “peak season” and warehouses full of employees working overtime to complete holiday orders. In November, Amazon allowed those who were fully vaccinated to go without wearing one, but now they have readjusted their safety protocols once again to include all personnel regardless of vaccination status.
The virus is reportedly causing an increase in cases of those affected. According to CDC data compiled by CNBC, it is now considered the primary strain in the United States, deemed 73% of cases.
Currently, Amazon does not require workers to be vaccinated but provides incentives such as bonuses and a “Max Your Vax” sweepstake. Prizes include cars, cash awards, and vacation packages.
Amazon concludes the notice by thanking its employees for complying and their service to the communities.
