Former state judge Elizabeth Frizell is opposing John Creuzot in the Democratic primary after narrowly losing the campaign for Dallas County district attorney in 2018.

Frizell got more votes on election day, but they were not enough to defeat Creuzot in 2018.

According to The Dallas Morning News, Monday is the deadline to file with the local Democratic party, with Frizell and Creuzot as the only to have filed.

Frizell lost to the current Dallas County DA in 2018 by 589 votes. Creuzot is also a former state district judge.

Frizell filed a lawsuit after announcing the 2018 results, alleging voter fraud but the suit was dismissed in December of the same year.

During their 2018 campaign, Creuzot raised more money than Frizell and outspent her. However, Frizell, who ran a largely grass-roots campaign, got a late boost from “civil rights activist” Shaun King in the weeks leading to the March election.

Frizell got more votes on election day, but they were not enough to defeat Creuzot, who got more early and mail-in ballots. King later said Frizell lost the election because Creuzot began his campaign long before she started hers. She added that his support for her came too late.

According to The Dallas Morning News, Frizell was elected to a state district felony court in 2014. Before that, she had been elected to a misdemeanor court in 2006.

Frizell presided over the state district felony court, Criminal District Court 7 until she resigned in 2017 to run for the Dallas County district attorney. Frizell also ran for the state Court of Criminal Appeals in 2020 but failed to land the role.
