The Skills That Will Matter More In An AI World

For generations, certain customs have guided how we greet people, introduce ourselves, dress appropriately, and conduct ourselves around others. Some call these customs “old-fashioned” or “classy.” But at their core, they are about something much more important: respect for our fellow man.

God calls us to interact with others with dignity, kindness, humility, and consideration. A firm handshake, eye contact, holding a door, putting away your phone during a conversation, dressing appropriately, and speaking respectfully are small ways of saying, I see you, and you matter.

Unfortunately, many of these skills are becoming less common among younger generations. Social media teaches children what is trending, but it does not necessarily teach them how to walk confidently into a room, introduce themselves, carry a meaningful conversation, listen well, or interact comfortably with people of different ages and backgrounds.

Adults have an opportunity and a responsibility to teach these skills again, and they may matter more than ever.

As AI continues to automate jobs and enter workplaces once dominated by human beings, technical ability alone will become less distinguishing. The people who thrive will increasingly be those who possess the qualities technology cannot easily replace: emotional intelligence, communication, empathy, discernment, leadership, confidence, and the ability to build genuine relationships.

Teach children to shake hands. Look people in the eye. Respect their elders. Put their phones away. Dress for the occasion. Listen before speaking. Write the thank-you note. Hold the door. And most importantly, teach them why.

These are not simply old-fashioned rules. They are lessons in respecting other people. I am grateful for the people who are raising me because I’m constantly reminded that in a world becoming increasingly artificial, raising children who are exceptionally human may be one of the greatest advantages.
