The residents of Mesquite will soon see improvements to some local parks after the Mesquite City Council passed several items during a meeting on February 21.

The items passed will provide funds for new local parks and for improvements to existing ones.

According to a press release, Mesquite City Council members approved the city’s first splash pad to be built at Clay Mathis Park.

The project will enhance the park by constructing a spray pad with additional parking, shade structures, updated playground equipment, and a new restroom building.

The city also revealed that the new Copeland Park will be constructed on eleven acres of undeveloped land at Creek Crossing Road and Mesquite Valley Road.

Phase one of the project will begin in early spring with the construction of a leash-free-zone dog park that includes a restroom building and a parking lot. The city added that the three-acre dog park is expected to open in late fall.

The city will also add a lighted basketball court and new playground equipment to Latimore Park beginning in the spring, according to the press release.

Mayor Daniel Aleman, Jr, said officials are looking for what is best for the city and each district. “We are doing something in each of the council districts to help continue to build the quality of life for the citizens in Mesquite and their children,” Aleman said in the press release.

The city also said that refreshed basketball courts, a lighted Futsal court, and other improvements will be added to the Motley and McWhorter Parks.
