Texas Christian University issued the following announcement on April 23
In honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May, TCU Magazine is featuring content on its website that displays the variety of influence Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have on the Texas Christian University campus and our broader communities.

And TCU Magazine is proud to amplify a range of valued voices,” said Caroline Collier, TCU Magazine editor. “This month we will spotlight the impressive academic contributions and leadership from Asian American and Pacific Islander faculty and alumni.”

TCU faculty member Guangyan “Gwen” Chen is working to prepare students who will work in multilingual, multicultural environments. Explore this story about the assistant professor of modern languages and her focus on cultural nuances when it comes to teaching language.
Sai Chavala, professor of surgery at the TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine, is working to cure macular degeneration by engineering skin cells into retinal cells and Weiwei Liu, assistant professor of economics, is exploring the relationship between gasoline taxes and fluctuations in demand.
Asian and Pacific American alumni are also making an impact. Revisit the stories of Eugene Chu ’04 (MBA ’15), who advises the U.S. Armed Forces on how they can best benefit from technological developments and Saipele “Sai” Tuialii ’18 MS who gives a unique perspective on community-police relations as a Samoan national at the Los Angeles Police Department.

History
Asian-Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. The recognition month began in the U.S. in 1978 with a designated week, marking two significant events: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants on May 7, 1843, and the contribution of Chinese laborers to the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. It was declared a month-long observance in 1992.
