Jacksboro Independent School District (JISD) resumed classes on Tuesday following the deadly tornado that ripped through a North Texas neighborhood on March 21.

According to previous reports from The Dallas Express, the tornado struck about 3 p.m. on March 21, causing massive destruction to homes and properties, including two schools and an animal shelter, leaving one person dead.

Jacksboro Elementary and Jacksboro High School sustained severe damage from the deadly storm, leaving classes canceled for the rest of the week.

Jacksboro ISD Superintendent Brad Burnett released a statement saying the district’s high school main campus will be ready to open this week for staff and students starting March 29.

“I am pleased to announce that Monday, March 28, will be a staff workday for all JISD employees, and classes will resume for all JISD campuses on Tuesday, March 29,” Burnett said.

According to Burnett, the elementary school will remain closed, but classes will continue in different facilities around the city. Contractors need more time to prepare the elementary campus for a safe return to the classrooms. It’s not yet clear when repairs will be completed.

The district has arranged for Jacksboro Elementary classes to resume temporarily at the First Baptist Church, Jacksboro Parish, Jacksboro Middle School, and Fort Richardson Masonic Lodge.

According to Burnett, Jacksboro Elementary School principal Michael Qualls is finalizing logistical plans and room assignments for each grade level in the school.
