Dallas Independent School District is providing breakfast and lunch to students 18 years old and younger.

The Summer Meals partnership is an initiative with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Texas Department of Agriculture.

Executive Director of Dallas ISD Food and Child Nutrition Services Michael Rosenberger said the program is in place so that children will not go hungry when school is out.

Organizers hope the partnership will help young people have access to “the healthiest meals.”

NBC 5 reported about 25% of children 18 years and younger living in Dallas have experienced “food insecurity” in the past year.

“We all thought we got over the hump of COVID, and we got to a level spot. Now, all of a sudden, in the face of rampant inflation, there are fewer and fewer dollars left for the food bill,” said Rosenberger.

Rosenberg said the free meals feature lean protein and whole grains with lots of vegetables and fruits.

Organizers hope that beyond filling stomachs, the free meals will provide economic benefits to families who will not have to spend “scarce dollars” on food.
