Texas authorities reported new human smuggling arrests, mass immigration prosecutions, and a multi-state conspiracy sentence in another turbulent week along the southern border.
Truck Driver’s Dramatic Arrest Near Laredo Unveils Shocking Smuggling Scandal
Federal officials claimed a truck driver transporting 15 illegal aliens in a stolen semi-truck was arrested near Laredo after allegedly attempting to flee a Border Patrol checkpoint, according to a December 9 post from U.S. Border Patrol Chief Michael W. Banks.
The post alleged that agents stopped the driver on Interstate 35, found people hidden in the sleeper compartment, and determined the truck had been stolen. Banks asserted that the driver “faces prosecution for alien smuggling” and that the individuals “will be processed accordingly and deported.”
Authorities have not released arrest affidavits, dashcam footage, or additional documentation substantiating the events described in the post.

A similar incident was described in a press release issued by prosecutors for the Southern District of Texas. In that case, a Houston resident was charged with smuggling “more than three dozen people” in a box truck allegedly discovered behind a false compartment near Hebbronville.
Prosecutors alleged the truck contained 40 individuals behind a screwed-shut wall with no means of escape. Authorities claimed that 26 of those individuals had previously been removed from the United States. The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced the case for the Southern District of Texas on August 18.
Mass Border Bust: 300+ Charged in Texas Immigration Sweep
Federal prosecutors also claimed more than 300 people were charged for immigration and border-related offenses over a one-week span, according to a December 5 press release issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas.
The release alleged that from November 28 through December 4, the district filed 316 cases, including 84 charges of illegal entry, 204 felony reentry cases, and 28 human smuggling charges. Officials further claimed that many of the defendants facing felony reentry charges had prior convictions involving narcotics, violent crimes, or immigration crimes.
Prosecutors alleged that several individuals attempted to unlawfully reenter the country within months of their most recent removals, naming Mexican nationals Jesus Hernandez-Gomez, Jose Martinez-Arrevalo, and Ascencion Avellaneda-Rodriguez. The release asserted that each had prior felony convictions for illegal reentry.
The press release also highlighted several individual cases, including the conviction of Carlos Alberto Garcia-Guajardo on 12 counts involving the sale of cocaine and firearms during an undercover investigation. Prosecutors claimed he had been removed from the country twice and now faces a potential life sentence.
In another case described in the release, Mexican national Alejandro Ramirez-Carranza was sentenced to five years in federal prison for transporting and bringing an alien into the United States, illegal reentry, and possession of a firearm by an alien.
No charging documents or related evidence were included with the announcement.
Smuggling Ring Busted: Brownsville Man Sentenced for Trafficking 100+ Migrants
A third federal case described this week involved the sentencing of a Brownsville resident accused of organizing a conspiracy that moved more than 100 illegal aliens through a series of tractor-trailers in 2024, according to a December 10 press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas.
Prosecutors alleged that Christian Ivan Hernandez, age 30, coordinated the transportation of approximately 107 individuals concealed in cargo areas across three tractor-trailers, along with 10 additional individuals in cab compartments. Authorities claimed Hernandez operated three stash houses in the McAllen area and had prior federal convictions for transporting illegal aliens in 2018 and conspiracy to transport illegal aliens in 2019.
U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos sentenced Hernandez to 60 months in federal prison followed by two years of supervised release. The release stated that three other men, identified as Carlos Josue Cruz-Rivas, David Vargas-Muniz, and Mendez-Hernandez, also pleaded guilty to their roles in the alleged scheme.
