A 32-year-old Garland man turned himself in to police after a fatal stabbing at a grocery store.

Juan Pedro Reyes surrendered Saturday morning, hours after the Friday night attack at a Fiesta Mart in the 2900 block of First Street, an arrest warrant states, per CBS News Texas.

Reyes told investigators he went to a skate park to be alone with thoughts of hurting someone to “prove he was tough,” the warrant says. He entered the store, stayed about 30 minutes, then stabbed 39-year-old Franky Selyma Arredondo Barrios from behind in the back of the store. No words passed between them.

Reyes fled, hid the knife in a nearby storm drain, and stashed his hat, gloves, and sweatshirt in a trash can at a park close to his home to avoid capture, according to the affidavit.

That night at home, his mother questioned the missing clothing. Reyes said he hid them because he had stabbed someone at Fiesta Mart. She initially dismissed it, and they went to sleep.

The next morning, Reyes’ father visited the store and confirmed the stabbing. The parents instructed their son to surrender and drove him to the station. Reyes said he was unaware Barrios had died.

Officers recovered the knife from the storm drain and the clothing from the trash can, matching Reyes’ directions.

Reyes remains at the Garland Detention Center, charged with murder.
