The Fort Worth Police Department fired an officer for a second time after authorities said he used excessive force against an arrestee.
On January 28, Mitchell Miller arrested a man for public intoxication and transported him to the Fort Worth jail.
As they were walking to the prison entrance, the man turned toward Miller, and the officer allegedly shoved the cuffed man to the ground. The suspect fell, face first, to the ground and lost consciousness.
Surveillance video obtained by CBS 11 corroborates the department’s claims.
According to police, Miller denied the accusations. When he was asked, he told his supervisor that he did not use excessive force on the man.
Another officer voiced concerns over the incident, and FWPD launched an investigation. The investigation results showed that Miller was “untruthful” in his report and had used excessive force.
Miller initially joined FWPD in 2017 but was one of five fired in 2019 after an incident in which Christopher Lowe, 55, was found unresponsive in the back of a police car in July 2018.
Lowe allegedly repeatedly complained of medical issues. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Miller and another officer were reinstated after completing updated training in February 2020.
At the time of his termination, Miller was assigned to the patrol division.
The department announced the termination in a news release, stating that it was a result of Miller’s “continued failure to adhere to the high standards that every Fort Worth police officer is expected to maintain during all interactions with members of the public.”
Miller’s case is being transferred to the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office for review.
